In the beginning...
It began in October 1990 with two former journalists in a Washington, DC church basement. The tools of the trade were an IBM Selectric II typewriter, two AT&T single-line telephones, a clunky Kapro computer and more moxie than start-up capital. The foundation of McKinney & Associates

(formerly McKinney & McDowell Associates) rests on humble but solid ground. The early projects included work with the anti-apartheid movement and promotion of the new South African government under Nelson Mandela.  The firm also managed the communications campaign for the promotion of the first conference by people of color on environmental justice and a campaign supporting a coalition of civil rights organizations’ push for renewal of the federal Civil Rights Act.
