Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington (PPMW)
provides health services and community education programs
to low-income and uninsured Washington-area residents.
In 1999, PPMW appointed Jatrice Martel
Gaiter its first new president and chief executive officer
in 14 years. Martel Gaiter's appointment presented the
organization an opportune moment to elevate its profile
in the reproductive health community and increase public
awareness and support
PPMW selected McKinney & Associates to assist in highlighting its comprehensive medical services, educational outreach programs, and community-oriented direction.
With new leadership as the linchpin, McKPR fashioned a multi-pronged approach to positioning PPMW as a leader in the reproductive health field. The work began with strategic planning and encompassed message development, strategic communications counsel, media outreach, and media event planning.
The firm developed a public service campaign,
arranged various media availabilities for Martel Gaiter, and
publicized and secured celebrity hosts for the organization's
annual awards luncheons.
McKinney & Associates garnered national attention for Martel
Gaiter and PPMW through securing a coveted commentary placement in the premier
African-American women's magazine, Essence. Other exposure included
a tour of women's magazines and coverage in the Washington
Post, Washington Business Journal, BET News, and Black
Enterprise and Emerge magazines.
